History of Narsaq
The Narsaq area has been periodically inhabited during the last 4500 years. The area has been popular throughout centuries due to the gentle climate and the good hunting grounds. The first people arrived in South Greenland was Eskimos of the Saqqaq-culture, which flourished from around 2500 B. C. until year 0. One often talk of 4 immigration waves to Greenland through out the last 4500 years, but whether there really was 4 different people/cultures is a question the scientists discuss. Any we now for sure that Greenland was uninhabited from around year 0 until Eric the Red arrived in 882. Read more of the Norse history elsewhere on these web pages. The Thule-Eskimo culture did not arrive in South Greenland before 1200, but this still means that the two people lived side-by-side until the Norse in a mysterious set disappeared around the 14th or 15th century. The recent history of Narsaq
The first trading post was established at Narsaq in 1830, called "Nordpröven"(The northern test), and proved to be so successful that it in 1850 was given its present name Narsaq. The colonial administration put a large effort into persuading the Greenlanders to maintain their semi-nomadic lifestyle, so for many years Narsaq mainly consisted of only a few houses. Gradually though the Greenlanders, wanting to be close to the store, started settling in the vicinity of the trading post. But it was not until Narsaq got its own fishing factory in 1953 that the town really started growing. In 1959 the population exceeded 600, and Narsaq received status of a town. Today Narsaq has 2 supermarkets, a church, a police station, town hall, firestation, a primary school, several educational facilities, internetcafé, several small shops and a hospital. |
